Sleep is a blessing from Allah ﷻ, and like every blessing, Islam teaches us to use it with remembrance and gratitude. One of the best ways to end your day is to recite the Dua before sleeping, as taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It protects the heart, body, and soul while strengthening our connection with Allah.

In this article, we will explore:

  • The authentic dua before sleeping in Arabic and English
  • The benefits of sleeping with dhikr (remembrance)
  • The Sunnah routine before sleeping
  • Best surahs and verses to recite at night
  • And answers to common questions related to Islamic sleeping duas.

Why Is It Important to Say a Dua Before Sleeping?

Islam is a complete way of life. Even simple acts like eating, drinking, waking up, or sleeping have recommended duas. Saying a dua before sleep has both spiritual and psychological benefits:

  • You fall asleep remembering Allah
  • It protects you from bad dreams and shayateen
  • It brings calmness and contentment
  • It is the Sunnah (way) of the Prophet ﷺ
  • It earns you reward while you sleep

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you go to bed, perform ablution as for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say: ‘O Allah, I submit myself to You…’”
(Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Authentic Dua Before Sleeping

Arabic Text:

بِاسْمِكَ اللّٰهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Transliteration:

Bismika Allahumma amootu wa ahyaa

English Translation:

“In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”
(Hadith – Sahih al-Bukhari)

This short and powerful supplication reminds us that sleep is a minor form of death, and only Allah ﷻ gives life again in the morning. By saying this dua, we submit our soul to Allah in full trust.

Extended Dua Before Sleeping from Hadith

If you want to go deeper, here is a longer dua reported from the Prophet ﷺ.

Translation:

“O Allah, I submit myself to You, and I turn my face to You, and I entrust my affairs to You. I rely completely on You, hoping in You and fearing You. There is no refuge or safety except with You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent.”
(Narrated in Bukhari)
